Hearing Aid Care

Whether you wear Behind-the-Ear (BTE), In-the-Ear (ITE) or tiny Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) hearing instruments, cleaning them daily is very important to ensure their best performance.

Here are some easy suggestions you should follow on a regular basis:

Behind-The-Ear hearing instruments (BTEs)

  • Wipe the hearing instruments and ear moulds clean with a dry cloth. Never wash the hearing aids themselves!
  • Make sure that there is no earwax in any of the ear mould openings which might reduce the hearing instruments’ efficiency
  • Open the battery compartments to allow air to circulate, when you are not using the instruments, especially at night

How to wash your ear moulds

  • The ear moulds should be washed regularly
  • Disconnect the ear moulds and tubing from the hearing instruments
  • Wash the ear mould in luke warm water using a mild soap. Don’t use strong detergents!
  • Rinse with water
  • Dry the ear mould with a cloth
  • Any water drops inside the ear mould or tubing should be blown out. A special blower is available from your hearing care professional
  • Make sure ear mould and tubing are completely dry before they are reconnected to the hearing instruments

In-The-Ear / Completely-In-the-Canal hearing instruments
(ITEs / CICs)

Your ear canal produces earwax which may clog up the sound outlet of your hearing aid. Therefore it is necessary to clean the wax filter at least once a day. To make cleaning easier, many of our In-the-Ear hearing instruments are equipped with a patented WaxBuster or MicroWaxBuster system for fast and easy removal of wax.

Cleaning the MicroWaxBuster

  • First wipe away any debris or wax on the outside of the sound outlet and around the actual component
  • Use the special cleaning pad provided or a clean cloth on a flat surface such as a table
  • Simply press the hearing aid firmly down against the cloth so that the tip of the MWB is completely depressed
  • Glide the hearing aid back and forth several times keeping the MWB pressed firmly against the cloth to complete the removal of wax from your hearing aid

What not to do

  • Never use water or alcohol to clean your hearing aids. You can wipe the outside with a tissue or use the cleaning tool that came with your new hearing aids for cleaning. Alternatively, use a soft, dry toothbrush.
  • Whenever you use lotion (especially suntan lotion), wash your hands thoroughly before handling your hearing aids or batteries. Using hairspray can also damage the instruments.
  • Hearing aids should never be exposed to extreme heat e.g. left inside a parked car in the sun. They should also never be exposed to a lot of moisture e.g. steam baths, showers or heavy rain.
  • If your hearing aids have been exposed to moisture or very humid conditions wipe them carefully and use an anti-humidity kit. Ask your hearing care professional for further advice.
